A Spark from the Past, Shaping the Future
You’ve heard of Foxfire — that’s likely how this message found its way to you. Maybe the name takes you back to the books, the stories, or the people who filled their pages.
But Foxfire is more than words on a page. It’s alive on our mountain — in the ring of a blacksmith’s hammer, the rhythm of a weaving loom, and the spark in a student’s eye. Some of our demonstrators first learned from The Foxfire Book; others from parents and grandparents whose stories inspired it. Today, those same skills are passed to new hands — one strike, one stitch, one lesson at a time.
This is Foxfire’s living legacy: an ember from the past carried forward by every new generation.
By supporting Foxfire, you can:
- Fuel Project Foxfire: Through Project Foxfire, high school students step into the role of storyteller — camera in hand, notebook at the ready — documenting the voices and traditions that make up Appalachian life. From gathering oral histories to creating each new issue of Foxfire Magazine, they’re learning how to honor the past while shaping the future with confidence and pride.
- Spark Curiosity in Our Students: Encouraging thousands of visiting students to step beyond the classroom to experience Appalachian life firsthand. From shaping iron at the forge to watching yarn spin into thread, these hands-on moments ignite wonder and show young people that the skills of the past still have power and purpose today.
- Ignite Appalachian Studies: Helping students turn the lessons of Foxfire into lifelong compass points. Through our dual-enrollment program, students step into adulthood grounded in Appalachian values, ready to share those strengths wherever their journeys lead.
As we look ahead to 2026, our goal is to raise $85,000 by January 1, 2026 to expand educational programs, welcome more students to the Village, and continue offering the hands-on experiences that keep Appalachian skills and stories alive.
Your gift keeps the flame burning bright for generations to come. Please consider a monthly donation or whatever frequency fits you best.
With heartfelt thanks,
Your Foxfire Family
